- The 1954 Corvette stands as a crucial moment in American automotive history, marking the second year of production for Chevrolet’s iconic sports car post its inaugural 1953 release. Building on the first model, this version presented substantial enhancements. A notable improvement was the introduction of roll-up windows, a significant upgrade from the previous year’s less convenient curtains. However, the renowned V8 engine, a key feature of future Corvettes, was not yet part of the 1954 version, relying instead on the Blue Flame inline-six engine that produced 155 horsepower at 4200 rpm and 223 lb-ft of torque. This pushed the 1954 Corvette to a top speed of 108 mph. The exterior design saw refinements, including a larger grille and more pronounced chrome accents, but it still had no exterior door handles. Those wouldn’t appear for two more years.
