The Peugeot family began a manufacturing business early in the nineteenth century. By 1882, Armand Peugeot had begun building bicycles in his family’s facility. After a meeting with Gottlieb Daimler in 1889, Peugeot saw the future of the automobile and began building steam powered automobiles. He quickly realized the disadvantages of steam power and in 1890, abandoned steam power for gasoline power relying on Panhard for his engines.

In 1896, Armand Peugeot  built his first engine and formed his own company, The Society of Peugeot Automobiles in order to focus on automobiles. In 1898, he built his first motorcycle and in 1901 added this line to his company.

Peugeot was a pioneer in motor sports and the brand has been quite successful throughout its history over the past one hundred plus years in business.

Today, Peugeot is known as PSA Group, a French multinational manufacturer of automobiles and motorcycles sold under the Peugeot, Citroen, DS, Opel and Vauxhall brands.
